Brentford 2 v 4 Nottingham Forest
Amazing fightback from Forest keeps them in the race
After conceding two goals Nottingham Forest finally found inspiration and four second-half goals kept them in third place. With Scunthorpe promoted and Bristol City winning the table looked very much as it had at the beginning of the day.
Brentford took the lead after 15 minutes and they reacted well to the goal while Forest never looked good enough to get back into the game.
When Brentford scored again in the opening minutes of the second half Forest had it all to do. But they finally showed some passion and produced three goals in 22 minutes. A fourth in stoppage made the game safe.
It was a slow start to the game with neither side creating anything in the early stages, although Forest looked more comfortable.
Their first real effort came from James Perch who shot straight at the Brentford keeper. And when Grant Holt laid the ball off to Lewis McGugan his effort from the edge of the penalty area went wide.
Grant Holt got clear when he picked up a long through ball from Jack Lester but Adam Griffiths blocked his attempt for a corner.
Thomas Pinault scored for Brentford when he side-stepped David Prutton and chipped the ball from the edge of the penalty area towards the back post. Paul Smith backed up as he realised the ball would go over him, which it did. It hit the crossbar and the post as it came down but the assistant indicated that the ball had gone over the line and Brentford were in the lead.
The goal gave Brentford confidence while Forest failed to threaten Brentford's goal.
With nine minutes to go before half time Forest had a rare chance from a free kick. McGugan shot towards the top corner but it went just over the crossbar.
And Perch was also over the crossbar from a tight angle when he arrived on the back post to get on the end of Kris Commons' cross.
But that was all that Forest could muster in an abysmal first half.
Forest's misery continued when Brentford got their second goal just two minutes into the second half. Lloyd Owusu got past John Curtis and rolled the ball to Charlie Ide who easily put the ball past Smith.
Forest got one back soon after. Commons won the corner and the ball came to Ian Breckin on the near post to. His header sent it across the goal to Prutton who nodded in at the back post.
Forest finally started to put pressure on and when Commons produced a great run he was finally crowded out but crossed to Grant Holt whose shot produced a great save from Stuart Nelson.
But then Smith missed a punch, giving Leary a chance to increase Brentford's lead, but he fired the ball over the bar.
Commons put Forest back on level terms in the 68th minute. Perch won the ball in midfield and put it through to Lester. He turned the ball to Commons as he raced towards the edge of the penalty area and fired a fierce shot which Nelson was unable to stop.
Forest were then awarded a penalty when Lester was brought down by Griffiths. Forest's leading goalscorer, Grant Holt stepped up to take it and sent the ball straight down the middle to put Forest back into the lead.
Forest continued to threaten and Lester did well to get through on goal but Nelson dived to his left to deny Forest a fourth.
Substitute Ross Montague, making his debut for Brentford, could have equalised but he headed over the crossbar from 5 yards out at the near post.
Wes Morgan was only on for four minutes before he went down holding his ankle and was replaced by Julian Bennett.
Commons got his second of the game a minute into stoppage time. He made a brilliant break and Lester did well to feed the ball through to Commons, who lifted the ball over Nelson and into the back of the net to make it safe.
