Nottingham Forest 0 v 0 Crewe Alexandra
Forest miss out on automatic promotion - the playoffs beckon!

Nottingham Forest finished the season in fourth place after they were unable to find a goal against Crewe and will now play Yeovil Town in the play-offs.

There was an electric atmosphere as the game got under way but, as Forest failed to find the target more than a couple of times and news came in of goals for Bristol and Blackpool, the City Ground became more subdued.

Forest built up the pressure in the second half and it was hard to see how they didn't find the back of the net as they kept it up until the final whistle.

Paul Smith was the first goalkeeper to see action when Ben Rix fed the ball through to Nicky Maynard who sent the ball flying towards goal but the Forest keeper was quick to react and make the save.

KrisCommons pushed forward for Forestwith a quick break and whipped a cross in to the six-yard box but the Crewe keeper got there before Grant Holt was able to get on the end of it.

And when Forest were awarded a free kick wide on the right Commons' shot into the box found Luke Chambers whose header was just wide.

From the first corner of the game Commons found David Prutton but his effort went just over the crossbar.

Crewe missed a chance when Luke Varney made a run down the left and sent the ball across the face of goal towards Maynard but Smith was able to reach it first.

Another good break by Crewe was wasted when Varney sent the ball across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

Both sides continued to push forward but Forest looked the less convincing of the two sides as they failed to threaten the Crewe goal.

Forest came close a minute before half time when James Perch sent the ball forward to Commons, who stabbed the ball towards the near post, but Ben Williams was able to put the ball round the post for a corner.

Forest started the second half brightly with a break down the left by Lester who turned and shot across the edge of the 6-yard box but Williams was on hand to gather the ball.

It was another ten minutes before Forest had another chance when the ball was deflected from Prutton's cross and Grant Holt headed just wide.

As Forest struggled to find the back of the net Scott Dobie replaced Grant Holt.

Crewe came their closest so far with an effort that saw Smith punch Maynard's shot away and Varney tried to get on the rebound but Chambers managed to get the ball away.

An effort by Prutton from 25 yards out was only inches wide of the near post.

Lewis McGugan did well to get down the left and beat his man. He hit the by-line and pulled the ball back to put in an excellent cross which Williams was able to get a hand to.

Forest were awarded a free kick when the hard-working Lester went down on the edge of the penalty area. It was taken quickly by Commons to the feet of Lester but again the Crewe keeper got on the end of it for a Forest corner.

Forest looked sure to score when Lester fed the ball through to Dobie who only had the keeper to beat but it was a very tight angle and his effort hit the post and came back out to a Crewe defender.

And it was close again when McGugan fired the cross to Chambers whose effort was cleared off the line by Ryan Lowe.

McGugan went off to loud applause with eight minutes to go and was replaced by Gary Holt. And Felix Bastians replaced Perch after he went down injured.

Crewe missed the chance of a late winner when the ball was fed through to substitute Mark Carrington whose shot from near the penalty spot was gathered up by Smith.

And Carrington had another effort tipped over the bar by the Forest keeper.

The crowd got behind the players as the game entered stoppage time and Forest continued to push forward but they were still unable to get on the scoreboard and had to settle for a draw and fourth place.
